How to make money on the Web

Making money online is not very different from making money offline.

You have to create value for your users; otherwise they won’t be interested in you and in your product in the long run.

You have to create something that makes their lives better, easier. Something they value. An online thing that's new or which is not new but you can make it better than your competitors; or an offline thing that's not online yet.

"Create a noteworthy online experience that’s either totally new or makes the user’s life much better. Or make an offline experience better/faster/cheaper so that switching is worth the hassle."[Seth Godin, The Ideavirus]

If you want to make money (either online or offline), you shouldn’t primarily focus on making money. You should focus on WHAT you want to offer in exchange for the money you want to make, and HOW you want to offer it to your users. How can you resume the value you provide in one sentence?

None of the guys who made money on the Web did make it in a couple of days. In fact, nobody got rich quick. There's hard work behind each great result. Focusing on the same goals for a long time. Perseverance pays off though, so if you want to make money on the Web, you should start learning directly from the leading people who really made it, and do so until you reach what you want. You can do it if you want to do it.

Forget the make money online scams and don’t buy any “super-secret package for just a couple of bucks", telling you the way to build a passive income overnight… whatever... the most valuable information on the Web is available for free. You just have to look for it in the right places.

Here are the ones you should start with:

Seth Godin – one of the greatest thinkers on marketing, the Web, value creation and a lot more.
Aaron Wall – Search engine optimization, online marketing and social network theory.
PPC Blog – Giovanna Wall's blog on Pay-per click advertising; a great source.
Jeremy Shoemaker – one of the number one experts on making money with affiliate marketing.
Frank Schilling – one of the most successful domainers on Earth.
Guy Kawasaki – one of the biggest names for venture capital and entrepreneurship.
Darren Rowse - the most reliable source on how to make money blogging

If you use an RSS Reader, such as Google Reader, subscribe to the blog of these guys, and keep reading their posts for a while. You will notice the difference and you will start thinking differently and more deeply on the subject. They don't tell you any secrets; they just share their experiences, how they've become successful in their industry, followed by plenty of great advice.

The guys who really made a fortune on the Web, don't try to sell any money-making secrets to you. There's no need for them to do so.

There are also a couple of books you should read if you are serious about starting a project on the Web, either you do programming yourself or with someone else’s help.
They are definitely worth the time.

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich - The Four-hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. This is a book that you have to start with. It will change your life.
Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us - Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us by Seth Godin
The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything - The Art of the Start by Guy Kawasaki
Reality Check: The Irreverent Guide to Outsmarting, Outmanaging, and Outmarketing Your Competition - Reality check by Guy Kawasaki
Founders at Work: Stories of Startups' Early Days - Founders at Work by Jessica Livingston. A great collection of interviews with the founders of some very successsful businesses on the Web, just as PayPay, del.icio.us, Hotmail, Apple, Firefox, GMail, Adobe, Yahoo!, Six Apart, Craigslist, TiVo, WebTV, and many more...

Apart from all this, you should find your passion. Find out what makes you happy. What motivates you. What gives you excitement in your life. Find your focus.

And the most important thing: don’t give up!
Keep searching and researching! If you concentrate on your goal long enough, you will succeed.

Good luck!
